Boxed In: Solitary Confinement’s Use and Abuse in New York Prisons

by

Solitary. Our assumption is that those experiencing solitary confinement in prisons “deserve it” or are somehow in need of such treatment. A recent investigation by the New York Civil Liberties Union finds that reality does not match up with preconceived expectations. In addition to the below video, a hefty printed (Adobe PDF) report entitled “Boxed In” is also available for free download. We who are Christians are commanded to visit those in prison and to care for them as well. The NYCLU’s pages have more information in becoming an activist. This study, in my opinion, points to the need for a national study along the same lines regarding the use of solitary confinement. Those inside “the box” have no advocates unless we outside do so.
