Solitary. Our assumption is that those experiencing solitary confinement in prisons “deserve it” or are somehow in need of such treatment. A recent investigation by the New York Civil Liberties Union finds that reality does not match up with preconceived expectations. We who are Christians are commanded to visit those in prison and to care for them as well. The NYCLU’s pages have more information in becoming an activist. This study, in my opinion, points to the need for a national study along the same lines regarding the use of solitary confinement. Those inside “the box” have no advocates unless we outside do so.
